WICHITA, Kan.--Mackenzie Wright homered in a five-run second inning and Erin Carney cleared the bases with a double in a seven-run fourth inning as Wichita State bested South Dakota 12-3 in five innings Friday at Wilkins Stadium.
The loss ended South Dakota's four-game win streak while Wichita State improved to 11-9. The rematch is Saturday at 2:30 p.m. South Dakota (4-6-1) also takes on Nebraska at noon.
Matley Jones had an RBI double in the first inning that gave South Dakota a 1-0 lead. She hit a two-run homer in her next at bat that cut Wichita State's lead to 5-3 in the third. It was Jones' second blast in as many games and fourth of the season.
Wichita State mixed seven base hits with nine free passes in stringing together runs in the second and fourth innings. Wright's solo shot tied the game at 1-1. Carney's three-run double followed three walks and a hit batsman. Pinch hitter Brianne Bond capped the rally with a two-out, two-run single that made it 12-3.
Coyote first baseman Yvon Minogue singled to left to lead off the third inning and has hit safely in all 11 games this season. Minogue leads the Summit with a .556 average - nearly 100 points better than the field. Shocker starter Kaitlyn Malone struck out nine to improve her record to 6-4.
