The 1968 South Dakota football team finished 9-1, becoming just the second team in school history to reach the nine-win plateau. The Coyotes' lone loss that season was to eventual national champion North Dakota State. Under the direction of head coach Joe Salem the team boasted five all-NCC players and All-American John Kohler. The team averaged almost 30 points per game while only allowing 17.3. It was also the first Coyote team to be ranked nationally and broke several team and individual offensive records. The 1968 team earned wins over NDSU, UND, SDSU, Drake, UNI, Northern Colorado and Montana - all current FCS teams.
