Under the direction of head coach Dave Gottsleben, the Coyotes won their first North Central Conference championship in 35 years and went on to place third at the national championship meet. The conference title ended North Dakota State's 13-year reign on top of the standings. Senior Matt Hoyt was named NCAA Division II Male Athlete of the Year for Outdoor Track after placing in the top four in three distance events at nationals. Junior Tom Green took second in the 100, third in the 200 and anchored USD's All-American 400-meter relay team. Ryan Finley, Pat Belling, Aaron Dykstra, Andrew Neugebauer, Steve Schmidt and Garrett Schramm all placed in the top eight at nationals to earn All-America status.
