Dr. Barbara Spears, a native of Huron, SD, won the South Dakota women's amateur golf title in 1954 as a 20-year-old who was making her first appearance at the state tournament. Spears, a doctor at the Pierre Clinic, is the former Barbara Krumm. Her state tournament victory also marked the first time in Huron entrant had won the state crown. Spears, who was named Phi Beta Kappa, graduated from USD in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Later, she earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical College in 1959.
