Bill Hamer, a native of New York, NY, was one of the outstanding scorers in South Dakota basketball history. Playing for head coach Bob Mulcahy, Hamer was just the second player in school history to score 1,000 career points. He ended his career (1966-70) second on the all-time list with 1,236 points in 76 games. Hamer had a remarkable senior season, scoring a school record 611 points (24.44 per game), and earning all-North Central Conference first team honors. He also was named to the CoSIDA's College Division Academic All-American Team. In NCC play, he scored a conference record 367 points. A captain during 1969-70, he helped guide USD to a 9-5 mark in the NCC and 15-10 overall record. He had a career high of 35 points vs. Northern Iowa on December 15, 1969 and twice scored 34 points during his senior season.
