Brent Fahnestock, a native of Laurel, NE, was a key contributor as South Dakota basketball reached the top of the North Central Conference in the early 1970s with head coach Bob Mulcahy. Fahnestock, a 6'4 forward, averaged a team-high 18.4 points per game, as the Coyotes captured the North Central Conference. USD was 11-13 in the NCC and 18-10 overall. Fahnestock, who was named to the Midwest Regional team, was a starter since his sophomore year. Fahnestock, averaged 16 points in 74 games. Fahnestock scored 42 points against Mankato State for the fourth best total in history. In the consolation game of the Midwest regional, Fahnestock tallied 36 points in leading the Coyotes to a 113-91 win over St. Olaf. Fahnestock, who ranks 12th on the career scoring list with the 1,182 points, was named all-NCC as a senior in 1972-73 after averaging 18.1 points.
