Carl B. "Rube" Hoy is a legendary coach that served more than 25 years as head coach, athletic director, and general handyman at South Dakota. Hoy, a football (All-Missouri Valley in 1919), basketball, and track athlete for the Coyotes, "Rube" returned to his alma mater in 1927 and directed the Coyote basketball squads until 1949. He also did a two-year stint (1952-1954) for a 24-year coaching career mark of 167-189. He was the coach of the Coyote team that knocked off No. 1 ranked Bradley (AP) in 1947-48, one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history. Teams in 1929-30 and 1930-31 won North Central Conference titles. Hoy has been also inducted into South Dakota Sports Writers Association's Hall of Fame and Helms Foundation's Hall of Fame among his many honors.
