Charlie Cutler, a native of South Bend, IN, was "Mr. Magic" for Coyote basketball during his playing days from 1970 to 1974. Cutler became a crowd favorite when he took over as a starter midway through his freshman season. A 5-11, 160 pound point guard, Cutler was a two-time all-North Central Conference selection, earning honors in 1972-73 and 1973-74. Cutler, who was a team captain as a senior, led the Coyotes to a NCC title in 1971-72 when USD went 18-10 and 11-3 in the NCC. When he graduated, he ranked third on the all-time scoring chart with 1,259 points and he was first in assists with 399. Cutler led the Coyotes to back-to-back NCC Holiday Tournament titles in 1972 and 1973, earning selection to the Holiday All-Tournament Team both seasons. He was named USD team captain during his senior year.
