The longtime dean of The University of South Dakota School of Law, Clark  Gunderson was the staff at the USD Law School for 30 years prior to his death in 1964. A 1926 graduate of Vermillion High School, Gunderson lettered in football during the 1928, 1929, and 1930 seasons, earning all-North Central Conference honors at center in 1930. He received his L.L.B. degree in 1932, graduating summa cum laude from USD. After graduation, Gunderson served the University as professor of law and legal advisor from 1934 to 1964. From 1941-46, he had a tour of military service. During his military career, he received the Army Commendation Ribbon in 1941 and was awarded the Bronze Star in april 1944. He was promoted to the rank of full colonel shortly before his discharge in January 1946.
