A three-sport star, Don Forney played football for head coach Harry Gamage from 1938-41, earning all-North Central Conference honors in 1940 and 1941 as a back. Forney was co-captain of the 1941 team that finished second in the NCC. In 1941, Forney had a 72-yard touchdown run in a 26-6 win vs. Augustana and scored 22 points in a 40-0 win over South Dakota State. Forney also played basketball and track and field in 1941 and 1942. A standout sprinter, Forney who was the captain of the 1942 squad, led the Coyotes to an upper division finish and won the 100-yard dash in 10.0. A native of Sioux Falls, he graduated with a business degree in 1942 and was a member of the ROTC.
