Dan McCarty was one of the standout track and field performers in the early, who ran track fromĀ 1960-64, sparked the Coyotes to the 1963 North Central Conference outdoor track championship with head coach Dan Lennon. He was also a member of the 1961 NCC outdoor championship squad. McCarty held the all-tie South Dakota intercollegiate record in the 440-yard dash in 1964 with 51.6 clocking and set the school's standard in the 220 with 21.6 time in 1963. McCarty, who won the 220-yard dash NCC title in 1963, was a member of USD's school-record 440-yard relay and he helped the foursome to a third place finish at the Drake Relays.
