Dave Heffern, native of Costa Mesa, CA, was one of South Dakota's outstanding cross-country performers. He was the first in the sport at USD to earn all-American honors after finishing third in the nation in 1965 and seventh in 1967. Heffern captured the North Central Conference cross-country title at the 1965 meet. He won the two-mile run in 1965 (9:39.0) and the three mile in 1967 (14:38.7) at the NCC Outdoor Championships.
