When football historians reflect on the great defensive players in South Dakota school history, Dave Schwab has to be considered as one of the best defensive tackles ever to don a Coyote uniform. Schwab, a native of Faribault, MN, was just one of four players in USD grid history to earn All-North Central Conference honors three consecutive years (1977, 1978, and 1979). He was an honorable mention all-American selection in 1978. In 1979 he was voted the NCC's most valuable defensive lineman. Schwab played a critical role in helping the Coyotes win the North Central Conference title in 1978. He was named Chevrolet Scholarship Defensive Player of the Game as he had nin tackles, four quarterback sacks, a deflected pass, and a forced fumble in USD's 21-3 win over Nebraska-Omaha that clinched the conference title. In 1980, he signed a free agent contract with the Green Bay Packers.
