Don Coutts was a standout track sprinter and halfback for the Coyotes, earning a rare four letters in both football and rack (1947-50). Coutts began his outstanding collegiate career seeing considerable action as a freshman running back on USD's 1947 North Central Conference championship football team, starting alongside USD immortals Jack Van Arsdale and Howard Blumhardt. Coutts, a native of Mobridge, SD, was the only double winner in the 1948 North Central Conference outdoor track meet, winning both the 100 and 220 yard dashes and also finishing second in the long jump. He was also a member of the 880-yard Coyote relay team which went undefeated and broke records at every meet entered in 1948. Coutts was head coach of all sports at Winner, SD High School during the 1951-52 school year before moving to California where he ahs been connected with law enforcement for the past 23 years. Coutts is currently the Chief Release Investigator for Riverside County in California.
