Don Jongewaard, a native of Hurley, SD, ranks as one of the outstanding basketball players in South Dakota men's basketball history. Jongewaard was a two-time all-North Central Conference selection earning the honors during the 1954-55 and 1955-56 seasons. He was first player in Coyote history to crack 1,000 points and the first to score 400 points in a season. In only 62 varsity games, he scored 1,005 points and ranked first in rebounds with 574. In 1956, he set a USD and NCC single game record with 45 points against North Dakota on Feb. 3, 1956. He also scored 38 points vs. Creighton on Dec. 13, 1954. Jongewaard led the NCC in scoring in the 1955-56 season with 20.7 points per game.
