Olympic medalist Eugene Vidal is considered one of the great all-time athletes in Coyotes school history. Vidal, who starred at South Dakota from 1913-16, lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track. After graduation he went to West Point where he was voted best athlete in his class and earned all-American honors. He competed in the Olympic Games in 1920 and 1924, and won a silver medal in 1920 (pentathlon) at Antwerp, Belgium. Vidal played pro football for both the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins, before launching a career in the airline business, helping both TWA and Northeast Airlines. Vidal, originally from Madison, SD, is the father of writer Gore Vidal.
