Frank Chamberlin was one of the early tennis stars at USD. In 1939, the Faulkton, SD, native teamed with Andy White to win the USD doubles championship. Chamberlin's status in tennis steadily grew, especially after a 15-year coaching career in which he helped produce some of the best tennis teams in Southern California. As a player from 1945 to 1980, Chamberlin played in approximately 350 tournaments winning 100 trophies, including three senior Olympic gold medals from 1978-80. Ranked for 13 years, Chamberlin's senior tennis career was highlighted by a win at the 1970 Los Angeles Metropolitan Open at age 55 in the 55-56 age class. The tournament had previously been won by the likes of Pancho Gonzales and Jack Kramer.
