Fred Malone was a three-sport standout for South Dakota, although he excelled at football and track and field. "Womp," as he was known in his collegiate days, played basketball one year but starred in football and track and field for three seasons. He was captain of both the football and track and field teams. Originally of Vermillion, he was twice named all-NCC (tackle), earning the honors both 1925 and 1926, he teamed up with Bill Dunkak, also an all-NCC lineman to form one of the best tackle combinations in the country. After graduating from USD in 1928, he was employed by Sears Roebuck and Company until he retired in 1968. He managed various Sears stores throughout the Midwest.
