Gene DeHaan was a track and field standout who starred for the South Dakota Track and Field squad in the early 1960s. His efforts helped the Coyotes capture North Central Conference titles in both 1961 (69 points) and 1963 (83 points). Individually, DeHaan won the 440-dash (49.2) during the 1961 North Central Conference outdoor track meet, the 220-yard dash title (22.1) at the 1962 NCC outdoor track meet, and he also was a member of the Coyotes' mile relay, which won an NCC title in 1962. DeHaan is now the athletic director as well as track and basketball coach at Sioux Falls Christian High School.
