A two-sport star, Gerald Krutsch was a standout tackle for South Dakota, earning all-North Central Conference football honors in 1947 and 1948. In 1948 he was selected on both the offensive and defensive all conference teams. A native of Hot Springs, Krutsch was also an outstanding performer in track and field, Krutsch won the shot put competition at the NCC meet in 1947 (47-2) and 1948 (17-3 3/8), which established a school record. The Coyotes finished fourth (24 points) in 1947 and third (30.5 points) in 1948. Interestingly, Hall of Fame member Dan Lennon coached Krutsch at Hot Springs and as a line coach for the Coyotes.
