Greg Willey was a standout track and field performer at South Dakota from 1976-80 and later was the head coach of the USD Women's Cross-Country and Track & Field program from 1984 to 1994. Willey directed the Coyote women to their first ever North Central Conference championship when USD claimed the league's Indoor title in 1989. For his efforts, Willey was named the College Women's Coach of the year. The Coyotes finished sixth at the NCAA Indoor meet and were second at the conference outdoor meet. The next year the Coyotes were in a class by themselves when they captured both the 1990 NCC indoor and outdoor crowns. Named the NCC Coach of the Year four times, Willey coached the Coyotes to their highest national finish ever when the 1994 contingent of only four athletes finished seventh with 30 points. A native of Onawa, Iowa, Willey attended West Monona High School where he was the Iowa State champion in the 200 and high jump. At South Dakota Willey won conference titles in the 440 and the decathlon. It was the grueling decathlon where Willey shined earning all-America honors twice in 1979 and 1980. He set the USD school record in the decathlon and he also ran on the record-setting distance medley relay team.
