Harlod Port, a native of Akron, Iowa, played during the late 1930s and was labeled by coach Harry Gamage, "the best blocking back I ever coached." Although he didn't have many opportunities to run the ball at fullback, Port was as tough as they come and was one of the main reasons South Dakota was able to capture the 1938 North Central Conference title. The Coyotes went undefeated (5-0) in NCC play en route to a 7-1 season. Port was one of five Coyotes to earn all-NCC honors that season and he was voted USD's Most Valuable Player.
