Legendary football coach Harry Gamage, who has the most wins by a football coach in school history, produced four North Central Conference champion squads during his 18 years of coaching from 1934-41 and 1946-55. While Gamage was head coach, South Dakota recorded a record of 82-67-7 and won outright league titles in 1938 and 1951 (the first NCC team to win all six league starts without a loss) and shared league honors in 1939 and 1947. He led the Coyotes to perfect NCC seasons in 1938, 1947, and 1951. Gamage has been also inducted into the South Dakota Sports Writers Associations's Hall of Fame and Helms Foundation's Hall of Fame among his many honors. A native of Macomb, IL., he was a former University of Illinois grid star. He coached at the University of Kentucky prior to takeover at South Dakota.
