The "Bowdle Blaster" was a three-sport standout, although he made his biggest mark in football. Blumhardt, a 215-pound fullback, lettered in football three years, earning all-North Central Conference honors in 1947 and 1948. He helped lead South Dakota to a share of the 1947 NCC title (Northern Iowa). In 1947, he was honorable mention All-America selection by the Associated Press and chosen by a unanimous vote by College of Pacific for their all-opponent team. Despite ankle injuries, Blumhardt was named to the 1948 all-league team. He was also drafted by the Chicago Cardinals in 1950 by legendary coach Curley Lambeau. Blumhardt also played basketball in 1947-48 when USD upset a number one ranked and undefeated Bradley, 54-51. He also participated in track and field as a junior and senior.
