James Dyer ranks as one of the truly outstanding men's basketball players in school history at South Dakota. Dyer earned third team Little All-American basketball honors his senior campaign at USD in 1963-64. When he graduated, he ranked second on the Coyotes' career scoring list (1.034 points). Dyer a native of Willow Lake, SD, was a two-time all-North Central Conference basketball performer for the Coyotes during the 1962-63 and 1963-64 seasons. Dyer, who played both guard and forward, led the Coyotes in scoring during both those campaigns. He also won the 1963-64 North Central Conference scoring title by averaging 23.1 points per game. Dyer averaged 30.5 points per game in the final four games of his career with outbursts of 31 against Morningside, 30 against Northern Iowa, 30 against South Dakota State and 31 points in a then school record 110-66 romp past Augustana.
