James Reid was a record-setting quarterback for South Dakota from 1955-58. A native of Sioux City, Neb., Reid was named the most valuable performer in the North Central Conference during the 1958 season, guiding the Coyotes to a second place finish. An all-NCC performer in 1958, Reid led the Coyotes to four straight wins to finish 4-2 in the NCC and 5-4 overall. Reid led the NCC in total offense in 1958 with 118.2 yards per game (70 rushes, 320 yards; 59 pass completions for 439 yards; for a total of 129 plays for 759 yards). In 1957, he led the NCC in punting, averaging 38.7 yards per punt (19-735). He finished his career with 1,201 passing yards (76-101-4 TDS) which set a USD record. Reid served five years in the Army where he became an aviator, including one year flying reconnaissance planes in Vietnam. Following completion of military obligations, Reid was hired by Trans World Airlines in 1965 and he was a captain for DC-9 aircraft.
