Joe Trudeau, originally of Jefferson, SD, was a two-sport star at South Dakota form 1969-73. Trudeau made his mark on the football field as a standout tight end, earning all-North Central Conference honors in 1971 and 1972. He wrapped up his career with 49 receptions for 996 yards and nine touchdowns. When he graduated, his 49 receptions ranked second in school history. In 1971 he had 22 receptions for 543 yards or 24.7 yards per catch. In a game against Idaho State, Trudeau was on the receiving end of an 84-yard touchdown pass from Tom Engleman, a play that still stands out as the school record. Trudeau set a school record for most receiving yards in a game by a tight end with 137 vs. North Dakota State in 1971. Trudeau was a versatile athlete who also excelled in track for the Coyotes. At the 1971 and 1972 NCC meets, he placed second and third in the 120 high hurdles.
