John Mehlhoff, originally of Eureka, S.D., was a standout defensive performer for Joe Salem's South Dakota football teams from 1970-74. He moved in the starting defensive tackle spot his spot his sophomore season and remained in the starting role for the next two years. Mehlhoff was a player that displayed excellent strength and range, averaging seven tackles per game as a junior and senior, while pacing the Coyotes in fumble recoveries his final year.
