Known in a Coyote uniform as Julia Frie, Julia Schlekeway from Byron, Minnesota, is an all-NCC forward who became the third USD female athlete to receive the prestigious Stan Marshall Award granted to the NCC Athlete of the Year. She finished her career with program ranks of seventh for points, eighth for steals, and 11th for rebounds. As a senior, she helped lead the Coyotes to a 27-5 record, an NCC championship, and a trip to the Sweet 16.

Julia never missed a game, and started all but three of USD’s 114 games from 1999 to 2003. She led the Coyotes in scoring as a freshman at 14 points per game. That included a career-best 31 points in her Coyote debut, a win against Concordia. She concluded her career with 1,302 points, 595 rebounds,
191 assists and 154 steals.

Julia was named an academic all-American in 2003 after carrying a 4.0 grade point average in biology and chemistry. Upon graduation, she earned her doctorate degree from Mayo School of Health Sciences in 2007. She and her husband, Mark, moved to Brandon, South Dakota, shortly thereafter. Julia works for Avera in an out-patient physical therapy clinic. The couple has two daughters, Griffen and Leighton, and a son, Talan.
