Les Smith, a native of Clinton, IA, and a long time Vermillion resident, certainly met the criteria of being a special contributor. Smith, who retired in 1983 after 26 years with the University's physical plant and housing department, assisted in selling and taking tickets during USD football and basketball games dating back to the mid-1960s. However, it didn't take long for Smith's enjoyment of Coyote athletics to reach other areas. In 1978, he stepped in as a driver for the USD baseball team. Smith, not only went on all the road trips, but also assisted in general home field maintenance, including cutting grass and laying down the lines on the field. Smith, a veteran of World War II, has continued to assist USD in a variety of ways. His volunteerism is an important role model for others to follow.
