One of the outstanding swimmers in USD school history, Downing participated for the Coyotes from 1990-94. She won three NCC titles and picked up four All-American honors during a stellar career. Downing, originally of Garden City, Kan., won a NCC title in the 200 butterfly in 1991 in 2:11.09. She captured the 400 IM NCC title in 1990 (4:39.80) and in 1992 (4:37.85). She finished seventh in the 200 butterfly in 1992 and was fourth in the 200 IM (2:09.60) in 1991 at the NCAADivision IInationals. She also earned a pair of All-American honors in the 400 IM, finishing fifth (4:34.40) in 1991 and sixth (4:38.27) in 1992. Downing has USD’s second-best time in the 200 fly with a clocking of 2:08.40 in 1991 (record broke in 2008). She also ranks third in the 400 IM (4:34.90, 1991), fourth in the 200 IM (2:09.60, 1991). sixth in the 100 fly (:59.31, 1991), ninth in the 200 breaststroke (2:32.59, 1992) and ninth in the 1,650 free (18:18.05, 1992) on The U’s all-time list. She earned a B.S. degree in education in 1996 and now lives in Arkansas City, Kan., where she is a special education teacher.
