Martin, who came to USD from Sac City, Iowa, is a four-time North Central Conference champion and the 1983 national-runner-up in the 800-meter run. His program-record time of 1:50.10 in the event stood for 18 years and remains the third-fastest time in program history. It was the fastest ever in South Dakota intercollegiate circles.Martin won NCC indoor 800 championships in 1983 and 1984. He won outdoor titles in 1983 and 1985. Martin was also a member of the Coyotes' sprint medley relay team, which set the all-time state collegiate record at 3:20.16. He was named USD's Male Athlete of the Year in 1985. In 2005, he was inducted into USD's Track and Field Hall of Honor.
Martin currently resides in Overland Park, Kan., where he is the owner of a remodeling company, JAM Construction, LLC. He and his wife, Tricia, have two sons, Jonathon and Andrew.
