Originally from Vermillion and now living in Yankton, S.D., he is one of South Dakota's greatest-ever offensive lineman. He helped lead the Coyotes to the 1978 NCC title. That season, Schurrer was named the NCC's Most Valuable Player-Offensive Lineman while being selected first team all NCC, first team Omaha World Herald all-NCC offensive center, first team all North Central Conference Academic Team, and an honorable mention Associated Press Little All-American Team selection. A recipient of the NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship as a senior, he was a three time (1976-78) academic all NCC selection. He received the Carl B. "Rube" Holy Endowment Award in 1979 from USD. A 1979 graduate, he earned a B.S. degree in chemistry and later received his M.D. from USD in 1984 He was named to Mortar Board and Omicron Kappa Delta honorary fraternities. In 2000, he moved to Yankton, S.D., where he is an emergency room physician.
