During Schamel's career (1982-86), South Dakota won 37 of 50 conference games, participated in three post-season playoff games, including a win at the North Central Regional in 1983-84 when the Coyotes were the NCAA Division Quarterfinalist runner-up. In her career, the Coyotes were 43-7 at home as she was a contributor on three NCC championship squads. She finished her career seventh on South Dakota's all-time scoring (1,264) and 11th in career rebounds (571).

Schamel, a senior co-captain in 1985-86, was named all-North Central Conference when she averaged 16.7 points and 5.8 rebounds and had the Coyotes' seventh-best point total ever (467). She set a school record as a sophomore, hitting 83.5 percent of her free throws (56-67)
