Nyal Brings was regarded as one of the premier small college distance runners in the Midwest and one of the best ever in South Dakota track and field history. A member of the Coyotes' North Central Conference outdoor championship mile relay squad in 1958, he was a double winner at the 1959 NCC outdoor meet, winning oth the 880-yard run and the mile. He defended his mile title at the 1960 NCC league meet. Brings also finished third in the invitational mile at the 1960 Drake Relays. Five minutes following his mile race at Drake, he helped USD to a sixth place finish in the mile relay. Brings closed his collegiate career by going undefeated in his final 12 880-yard races.
