Spencer Brende, a two sport-star at South Dakota, lettered four years in track and three years in football.

A smallish tailback (5-10, 150 pounds), Brende was a key contributor on the 1951 Coyotes, led by legendary coach Harry Gamage, that rolled to a 6-0 record (7-1 overall) and a North Central Conference championship. In 1951 Brende was named all-North Central Conference, becoming South Dakota's first NCC total rushing champion (144 attempts, 710 yards). He is also one of two Coyotes in school history to lead the NCC in total offense (136 plays, 710 rushing yards, 249 passing yards, 959 total yards). In his career, he had 1,063 yards rushing, 1,074 yards passing, 10 touchdown passes and a total of 104 points scored.

Named Athlete of the Year in 1946-47 at Sioux Falls Washington, he ran on the 1950 USD mile relay team that set the all-time South Dakota record of 3:23.4 at the Sioux City Relays and was a member of three winning NCC mile relay squads. He received a bachelor of science degree in education in 1953 from USD. A retired teacher, he and his wife Betty live in South Sioux City, Neb.
