Steve Adkins was one of the early standout basketball players for South Dakota, becoming the Coyotes' first basketball player to earn a spot on the all-North Central Conference team three times. Adkins led the conference in scoring as a junior and was runner-up as a senior. A two-sport star, Adkins played football in Canada with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, then coached at Flandreau and Vermillion before entering the insurance business. He served as supervisor for the western United States for the Old Republic Insurance Co.
