Tom Luby, a sharpshooter form Huron, SD, was one fo the great all-time basketball players in school history. He led USD in scoring from 1946-48. A captain for the 1946 and 1948 squads, Luby was named all-North Central Conference in 1945-46, 1946-47, and 1947-48. He played a key role in one of the memorable upset victories by South Dakota. The Coyotes defeated Bradley, 54-51, in 1947. At one time, Bradley was undefeated and ranked number one by the Associated Press. Led by Head Coach Carl B. "Rube" Hoy, Luby scored 13 points to spark the Coyotes to the upset victory.
