V.E. Montgomery, who was inducted into the Coyote Sports Hall of Fame with his son Vince, Jr., was one of the outstanding coaches in Coyote school history. Montgomery coached both football and basketball for the Coyotes. He coached football for four seasons from 1927-30, leading South Dakota to its first-ever North Central Conference title. He had a record of 15-16-3 and 6-10-1 in the NCC. In 1927, his Coyotes went 7-2, including a perfect 5-0 in NCC play. During that special year, USD lost only to Northwestern and Tulsa early in the year and finished strong, recording four shutouts and allowing just 25 pints in the seven victories. He also coached four season (1923-27) at USD's head basketball coach, recording a 31-37 record. He was 16-29 in NCC play. He lived in Springfield, SD.
