Wayne Carmody was a standout football player for South Dakota in the early 1940s. Carmody, originally of Ramona, SD, was an all-North Central Conference performer as a back in 1942. A three-year letter winner (1940-42) for the Coyotes, he played quarterback in 1942, finishing second in the NCC in scoring. He scored three touchdowns in a 37-12 romp past North Dakota State and had two touchdowns and an interception in a 26-6 win on Dakota Day vs. Morningside. He led the Coyotes to a 6-2 record, including a 4-1 mark and second place in the NCC in 1941. During that season, Carmody directed the first use of the T-formation for head coach Harry Gamage. He was a prep standout at Sioux Falls Cathedral captaining the 1938 football squad. Carmody was killed while serving with the Marine Corps in the Pacific October 3, 1944.
