Wayne Gutzman made significant contributions to the USD Athletics Department as USD's faculty representative to the North Central Conference for 15 years and as a member of the Athletic Board of Control for 20 years. While a graduate student at Iowa, he came to USD for the first time in 1930. He returned to Iowa and finished his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1940. After teaching at Hunter College on Manhattan Island, NY, he joined the Navy in 1941 and was discharged in 1946. In 1947, Gutzman returned to USD as a professor of mathematics. He also served as academic dean, graduate dean, dean of instruction and chairman of the USD mathematics department. A member of the North Central Conference Hall of Fame, Gutzman is a native of Kensington, KS. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Fort Hayes State and his master's and doctoral degree at the University of Iowa.
