This week in Coyote athletics 
VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota football plays its season finale in a showdown with South Dakota State, men’s basketball opens its season with four games in five days and women’s basketball plays Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, this week in Coyote athletics.
South Dakota football (1-9, 0-7 MVFC) will head to Brookings, S.D., to play South Dakota State in what will be its final game of the season. Game time is 2 p.m. Saturday. In the Coyotes last outing against Northern Iowa senior wide receiver Will Powell (Sioux Falls, S.D.) had a season-high nine receptions for 127 yards and a touchdown, while Josh Vander Maten (Boyden, Iowa) threw for 205 yards while running for another 135.
South Dakota State (7-3, 5-2 MVFC) running back Zach Zenner is second in the nation in rushing, averaging slightly under 154 yards per game and scoring nine touchdowns.
Men’s basketball makes its season debut in the Global Sports Showcase in Laramie, Wyo., Wednesday against Southern at 5:30 p.m. The Coyotes will follow that up with tournament matchups on consecutive days against Wyoming and North Carolina Central before travelling to Spokane, Wash., for a 3 p.m. clash with the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Sunday.
The Coyote men will feature point guard Juevol Myles (Ajax, Ontario), who averaged 24 points per game during the team’s two August exhibition games in Canada, while Trevor Gruis (Ellsworth, Minn.) is the top returning leading scorer (11.3 PPG) and rebounder (6.7 RPG).
Women’s basketball (1-1, 0-0 Summit League) will take on Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls Thursday at noon. Nicole Seekamp (Renmark, Australia) led the Coyotes in scoring in their first two games, averaging 18.5 points and earning Summit League Player of the Week honors.
The Northern Iowa Panthers (0-1, 0-0 MVC) were picked to finish fourth in the MVC in a preseason poll of the leagues’ coaches after finishing 19-15 last season.
Men’s and women’s swimming and diving heads up to Brookings for a dual meet with South Dakota State. Colin Krysl (Bellevue, Neb.) had six top-five finishes during the two-day Border Battle this past weekend including a victory in the 200-yard freestyle (one minute, 57.96 seconds), while Cassie Kimmes won the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:15.18).
Cross country wrapped up its season Friday at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in Springfield, Mo., at the Missouri State Cross Country Course, where both the men and the women finished in the top-15. Ethan Marquardt (Albert Lea, Minn.) led the men, finishing 38th overall in the 10-kilometer race, while Amber Eickhorn topped the women with a 58th place finish in the 6K.
