Final Stats
KISSIMMEE, Fla.â€"South Dakota defeated La Salle 10-1 and Penn 9-1 (5 inn.) on Tuesday at the Osceola County Softball Complex, as five USD batters combined to hit seven home runs while USD pitchers Madison Frain and Erica Denney struck out 19 batters and allowed only five hits. The Coyotes are now 5-1 at the Rebel Spring Games and 12-8 for the season.
Allie Daly was 6 for 7 on the day with three home runs and six RBIs. She now has seven home runs on the season, tied for 8th most in USD single-season history with 36 games to play in the regular season. Yvon Minogue went 3 for 6 with one home run and six RBIs while Lindsey Boyd had three hits, took three walks, stole four bases and scored five runs. Christine Broders, Matley Jones and Morgan Hancock also homered for the 'Yotes.
USD opened the scoring against La Salle (3-2) with a run in the top of the third inning. Boyd led off the frame with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a Minogue single into center field.
The Coyotes pushed their lead to 4-0 in the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out Katelyn Wudel scored on a passed ball. Two batters later and with runners on second and third base, Daly ripped a single to left field to plate both Boyd and Katie Dinning.
After a Minogue sacrifice fly scored Wudel and advanced Boyd to third, Daly hit a two-run home run, extending the USD lead to 7-1.
In the game's final stanza Hancock hit a three-run home run to right center field. The homer was her third of the season
USD freshman pitcher Madison Frain had a career-high 15 strikeouts in the game, recording two or more strikeouts in six of seven innings and surrendering one unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
South Dakota brought its game with Penn to an early end by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Daly led off the inning with a solo home run, her second of the game and third of the day. After Katie Cochran reached base on a walk, Broders hit a two-run home run to straight away center field. Five batters later, with the bases loaded and two outs, Minogue singled up the middle to bring home both Jones and Boyd and evoke the NCAA's eight-run mercy rule.
USD opened the game with back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first inning. With one out and Boyd on third base Minogue stepped up to the plate and launched a two-run home run, and Daly followed with a home run of her own to left center field.
The Coyotes pushed its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning with Jones' solo home run to right center field, her second home run of the season.
Penn's Korinne Raby responded with a solo shot of her own to bring the score to 3-1 in the top of the second inning, but USD pitcher Erica Denney did not allow another hit for the game. Denney went all five innings for the 'Yotes, striking out four and walking three.
USD will play St. Francis (Pa.) at 8 a.m. CST and Grambling State at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning.
