Former South Dakota volleyball head coach Matt Houk named Michael Runde as graduate assistant for the USD volleyball program on June 5, 2013. The 2014-15 season will be his second with the program.

In 2013, Runde helped the Coyotes to a 19-13 overall record and a 9-5 record in the Summit League. The Coyotes were 8-0 at home. USD advanced to the Summit League Tournament, where the team defeated Western Illinois in the quarterfinals and advanced to the semifinals.

A native of Dubuque, Iowa, Runde was the head coach for the Iowa Rockets Volleyball Club based in Iowa City from 2009 to 2012. He led the club to three USA Volleyball National Championship appearances. Along with coaching the Rockets, he spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons as a manager for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Runde graduated from Iowa in 2013 with a degree in Sports and Recreation Business.
