The University of South Dakota volleyball team (10-14, 2-5) continues to show improvement after a three-game win (15-9, 16-14, 15-11) over St. Cloud State in North Central Conference play today in the DakotaDome.
The Coyotes controlled the match from the start, recording a 15-9 opening game win over St. Cloud State (4-13, 1-7) before fighting back from a 14-10 deficit in the second game to win 16-14. They took the third game 15-11 as they recorded their second NCC win of the season (both against St. Cloud State). The Coyotes' 10 overall wins represent the most victories by a USD volleyball team since 1988. USD's two NCC wins is the most since the Coyotes won four in 1997.
Leading the way for South Dakota was sophomore Amber Abrams, who had a team-high 12 kills on 39 attacks and had 10 defensive digs. Freshman Sarah Vollertson had 11 kills on 19 attacks for a .526 hitting percentage and recorded two solo blocks and one block assist. Sophomore Leslie Fusinato had 11 kills on 26 attacks for a .346 hitting percentage. She also had a team-high 17 defensive digs. Freshman Angela Golesh recorded 38 assists and nine defensive digs. Overall, the Coyotes had 50 kills on 129 attacks for a .318 hitting percentage. USD had 69 defensive digs and eight total team blocks.
For St. Cloud State, Melissa Wright had 14 kills on 33 attacks for a .364 hitting percentage while Katie Larsen had 11 kills on 45 attacks. Overall, the Huskies recorded 41 kills on 128 attacks for a .203 hitting percentage. They had 65 defensive digs and seven total team blocks.
