Women's Basketball Faces Morningside, Sioux Falls

Feb. 16, 2001

South Dakota women's basketball team (12-10, 7-8 in the NCC) will try and extend a four-game North Central Conference winning streak when they meet Morningside (4-19, 1-14 in the NCC) on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Allee Gym in Sioux City, Iowa. South Dakota will face the University of Sioux Falls (13-14, 8-7 in the Great Plains Conference) at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18, at the DakotaDome.

SEASON TO DATE: The Coyotes are 8-4 at home, 4-4 on the road and 0-2 on a neutral floor. In NCC play, they have a 5-4 mark at home and 2-4 away. South Dakota recorded a 5-2-nonconference record including 3-0 at home, 2-0 away and 0-2 on the road.

SERIES: South Dakota owns a 30-12 series advantage over the Mustangs. On Jan. 20 at the DakotaDome, the Coyotes recorded a 72-50 victory at the DakotaDome. Sophomore Amanda Iverson scored 16 points and had eight rebounds while freshman Krista Orsack added 14 points for South Dakota. The Coyotes defeated Morningside, 92-46, at the DakotaDome on Jan. 22, 2000. South Dakota also defeated the Mustangs, 77-57, at Allee Gym in Sioux City, Iowa on Feb. 19, 2000.

COYOTES HAVE FOUR-GAME WINNING STREAK - DEFEAT TWO TOP 10 TEAMS: The Coyotes are playing their best basketball of the season with four straight NCC victories, including two wins last weekend over top-10 ranked opponents North Dakota State and North Dakota. South Dakota guard Kelly Koepp hit two shots late in overtime, including a baseline jumper with 14 seconds left, to send the Coyotes to a dramatic 72-71 win over No. 9 ranked North Dakota State, 72-71 in overtime, on Feb. 9. One night later, Kelly Gese scored 17 points and Heather Nelson had 19 as the Coyotes built up a 15-point lead in the second half and took a 74-65 decision over No. 2 ranked North Dakota, on Feb. 10. Prior to that, the Coyotes had won consecutive road games at Nebraska-Omaha (70-54), Feb. 2, and a thrilling, 64-62 win at Northern Colorado on Feb. 3 when point guard Kelly Gese drove three-quarters of the court and threw in a ahot in the final seconds.

COYOTES PUT CLAMPS ON LOSING STREAKS: For the first time since the 1983-84 season, the Coyotes defeated both North Dakota schools on the same weekend. This is the Coyotes first four-game win streak since the 1985-86 season when the Coyotes ended the year with consecutive wins over Augustana, 72-60, South Dakota State, 69-65, St. Cloud State, 75-66, and Minnesota State-Mankato, 62-61. The Coyotes have not won five NCC games in succession since the 1983-84 season when the Coyotes won nine in a row and rolled to a 22-7 record (10-2 in the NCC) and won the NCC. In defeating NDSU, the Coyotes snapped a 32-game losing streak to the Bison that dated back to February 24, 1985. The win over North Dakota broke a 23-game losing streak vs. the Fighting Sioux that extended back to the 1989 season.

IN-GAME NOTES

ABOUT MORNINGSIDE: Morningside has scored 1,509 points for an average of 65.6 per game, while allowing 1,883 points or 81.9 per game. They have outrebounded opponents, 45.3 to 41.1. This season the Mustangs have hit 558 of 1,465 field goals for 38.1 percent. They have made 77of 268 three-point field goals for 28.7 percent and 227 of 327 free throws for 69.4 percent. Trish Martin is leading the Mustangs in both scoring (13.6) and rebounding (13.9). Martin has led the Mustangs in rebounding 14 times and has a high of 25 against St. Cloud State on Dec. 8 (82-62) loss. She also has the team-high in points with 23 vs. Northwestern on Nov. 30 (98-76 loss).

ABOUT SIOUX FALLS: The University of Sioux Falls has a 13-14 record including an 8-4 home record, 5-9 away and 0-1 on a neutral floor. They have an 8-7 record in the Great Plains Conference, including 5-3 at home and 3-4 on the road. The Cougars have a 5-7-nonconference record, including 3-1 at home, 2-5 away and 0-1 on a neutral floor. Sioux Falls has outscored opponents by a 843-831 margin in the first half, 938 to 921 in the second half while being outscored 12 to nine in overtime for a 1,790 to 1,764 overall points advantage. The Cougars have hit 654 of 1,495 field goals for 43.7 percent and 106 of 327 three-point field goals for 32.4 percent. They have hit 376 to 621 free throws for 60.5 percent. Sioux Falls holds a 42.6 to 32.7 rebound advantage. The Cougars will play Dana College on Saturday, Feb. 17.

COACHES:

South Dakota's Chad Lavin, a 1978 graduate of South Dakota, is in his third (seventh overall) year as head coach at South Dakota with a 112-78 (.589) mark at South Dakota and 286-241 (.542) record overall. Lavin directed South Dakota to an 82-32 (.719) record and three consecutive North Central Conference basketball championships from 1982-85. Lavin was the head women's coach at the University of Wyoming from 1986-98 where he constructed a record of 175-162 (.519). Lavin's 1996-97 team was recognized for attaining the second-highest grade point average in NCAA Division I. His Wyoming team is one of only two teams to participate in every High Country Athletic Conference and Western Athletic Conference postseason tournaments from 1986-98. Lavin, a three-year letterwinner for the USD men's basketball program, including being named to the academic all-North Central Conference team in 1978, earned a B.S. degree in business management from South Dakota in 1978 and an M.A. in physical education in 1983. Lavin, a former head coach at Dell Rapids High School (22-19) in 1979, was a men's basketball assistant at Mount Marty College in 1981-82. Lavin, who directed USD to three NCAA Division II regional tournament berths, was twice NCC Coach of the Year and the South Dakota Sportswriters Women's Collegiate Coach of the Year in 1984-85. His 23-6 record in 1984-85 stands as the best mark in school history. He is married to the former Cindy Little of Castlewood, S.D. Coyote assistants include Becky Flynn, a 1996 graduate of Creighton University and Jay Hennies, a 1965 South Dakota graduate. Hennies played for South Dakota from 1961-65.

CRAIG STEVENS is in his second season as head basketball coach at Morningside. In 2000-01, the Mustangs have a 4-19 record includes a 1-14 NCC conference. A year ago, the Mustangs were 1-26. Stevens, the sixth women's coach at Morningside, was promoted after serving one year as the Mustangs' assistant coach. He was an assistant coach for one with the Morningside men's team. He was a graduate assistant at Morningside from 1990-92 before he took a position with KNOP-TV of North Platte, Neb., for one year. He returned to basketball, accepting the head women's and assistant men's basketball coach position at Mid Plains Community College in North Platte. He had a 21-27 record during the 1993-1995. He was also a men's basketball assistant under current Morningside coach Jerry Schmutte while both were at Nebraska Wesleyan in 1988-90. A native of Falls City, Neb., he earned an associate of arts degree from Dodge City (Kan.) Community College in 1986 and a social science degree from Peru State College in 1988. Stevens was the starting quarterback for Peru State, a perennial football power. Tami White, a 1998 graduate of Missouri Valley College, assists him.

KATIE DAILEY is in her fourth season as the head coach of the University of Sioux Falls, where she has compiled a 44-36 record (13-14 in 2000-01). Over the last two seasons, Dailey has guided the Cougars to a dramatic turnaround, going 31-22 over that period. As a player, Dailey was a four-year letter winner in basketball and softball at USD from 1981-85. She earned first team all-NCC basketball honors three times (1982-83, 1983-84, and 1984-85), playing point guard for current South Dakota coach Chad Lavin. In October of 1999, Dailey, who holds the Coyotes' career assist record with 665, was inducted into the USD Athletic Hall of Fame. Steph Kelley assists her.

GESE MOVES INTO 8TH PLACE ON CAREER SCORING CHART: Gese has scored 251 points (11.4 per game) this season for a career total of 1,227, which places her 8th on the school's all-time scoring chart. With 33 points last weekend in the victories over North Dakota State and North Dakota, Gese passed Gloria Suntken, who had 1,212 points from 1977-81. The all-time leading scorers include Karrie Wallen (1980-84), 1,595, Ann Pancoast (1981-85), 1,591, Shelby Petersen Mayer (1990-94), 1,487, Renee Steeve (1977-82), 1,306, Amy Heller (1987-91), 1,282, Stacy Kracht (1987-91), 1,277, and Mitzie Frericks (1982-86), 1,264.

GESE CHASING ASSISTS, STEALS LEADERS: With 125 assists (5.7 per game) this season, Gese has 418 for her career, which is third on the school's all-time assist list. Gese has three of the 20 best all-time single season assist totals in school history. Her total this season is the 10th best all-time and her 119 assists in 1997-9 is 11th best all-time. Her total of 105 in 1996-97 is the 17th best total in school history. Katie Dailey holds the single-season school record for assists with 212 assists in both the 1982-83 and 1984-85 seasons. Dailey is now the head coach the University of Sioux Falls. In addition, Gese is currently 15th all-time in career steals with 124 (27 this season). Immediately ahead of Gese is Gloria Suntken (1977-81), 126.

ORSACK MOVING UP SINGLE SEASON 3-PT LIST: With 48 three-point baskets this season, freshman Krista Orsack has tied two other teammates for the 8th best three-point field goals made in a single season. Orsack has 48, a total set by sophomores Heather Nelson and Nicole Jaycox a year ago. Shelby Petersen Mayer has the Coyotes' best single season mark for three-point field goals with 89 during the 1991-92 season. In fact, Mayer has the four best single season totals in Coyote history. The other three totals include 71, 1992-93, 63, 1993-94, and 48, 1990-91.

NELSON MOVING UP CHARTS: In just a year and half, Nelson (29 in 2000-01) has moved into fourth place on the career three-point field goals list with 77. Ahead of her is Shelby Petersen Mayer (1990-94), 271, Anne Knudtson (1994-98), 131, and Sherri Bitter (1991-95), 81. This past weekend (Feb. 9-10), she passed Jodi Beavers (1991-95), 74. Nicole Jaycox has 21 three pointers this year which gives her 69 for her career, the sixth most in school history. Frie is seventh best all-time with 60 three-point baskets including 15 this season.

BEST OF TIMES: The rock band Styx song "The Best of Times" is one that South Dakota came relate to in its games vs. North Dakota this season. The Coyotes experienced "the best of times" when they shot a season-high .512 from the field (21-41) vs. North Dakota as the Coyotes recorded a 74-65 win over the Fighting Sioux. Earlier this season, the Coyotes experienced "the worst of times" when they shot a season low .286 (18-63) in losing at Grand Forks, 76-48.

NCC TEAM NOTES (As of Feb. 5): The 113 points South Dakota scored vs. Minnesota-Morris is the second best scoring game among NCC league members this season. South Dakota's 43 field goals in that game is also a NCC high as were the 13 three point shots made and 35 assists in a game. The Coyotes' 51 free throw attempts vs. St. Cloud is also an NCC high and 36 free throws made in the same game is the second best total in NCC play this season.

* Julia Frie is 4th in free throw shooting at 81.6 percent (62-76). Frie is 9th in defensive rebounds at 4.55 per game (100). Her 6.5 rebounds per game ranks 12th in the NCC. She ranks 13th in scoring at 12.5 points per game. Frie is 15th in the NCC in field goal percentage at .467 per game (99-212).

* Kelly Gese leads the conference in assist/turnover ratio at 2.72 (125 assists, 46 turnovers). She is second in assists (125) at 5.7 per game. Gese is 9th in free throw percentage at 79.5 percent (70-88). She is also 21st in scoring at 11.4 per game.

* Kelly Koepp is 24th in scoring at 10.6 per game.

* Krista Orsack is 2nd in the NCC in three-point field goals made with 2.18 (48) per game. She is 7th in 3-point field goal percentage at .353 (48-136).

* Heather Nelson is 10th in 3-point field goals made 1.38 per game (29).

* South Dakota is first in assist/turnover ratio, 1.43 (347 assists, 243 turnovers), second in free throw percentage, .717 (332-463), second in 3-point field goals made, 5.91 per game (130), and fourth in turnover margin, 4.00 (243 for South Dakota and 331 by opponents), 3rd, scoring defense, 65.5 per game (1,441 points), 4th, field goal pct. Defense, .380 percent (502-1,322).

PLAYER PROFILES

Kelly Gese: A senior guard from Shoreview, Minn., Gese has 14 double figure-scoring games in 2000-01 and a total of 49 during her career. She has scored in double figures in 10 of the past 12 games. Gese scored career high 27 points in a 55-50 win over Southwest State during the 1998-99 preseason. Three times this season Gese has scored her season high of 18 points (Northern Colorado, 1-5-01, Nebraska-Omaha, 2-2-01, and Northern Colorado, 2-3-01) An all NCC and all North Central region selection in 1998, Gese had her career high assist game (11) in the Coyotes 81-56 win over Grand Canyon on Nov. 25, 2000. It was also her only double double (10 points, 11 assists) of the season. She is third on the Coyote all-time assist chart (418) and 9th in career scoring (1,227). Gese, averaging 11.4 points and 5.7 assists this season, scored 500 points in 1998, which is the fourth best single season scoring effort in school history. Gese, who has started all 22 games, is averaging 32.4 minutes per game. She has hit 90 of 209 field goals for 43.1 percent and 70 of 88 free throws for 79.5 percent. She is just one of 11 from three-point range. Gese is averaging 12.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game in NCC play

Kelly Koepp: A senior point guard from Jordan, Minn., Koepp has 13 double figure scoring games this season and a total of 30 for her career. She had a career high of 38 points, a Coyote single game record, in the 96-54 win over Huron on Dec. 10, 1999. Her season high is 21 points in the 77-69 win over Northern Colorado on Jan. 5, 2001. Koepp has broken the 20-point barrier seven times in her career at South Dakota. She has a season high of seven rebounds in the 76-48 loss to North Dakota in Grand Forks on Jan. 12, 2001. She is averaging 10.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in 2000-01. A starter in all 22 of USD's games, Koepp is averaging 27.8 minutes per game. She has hit 77 of 197 field goals for 39.1 percent and 70 of 105 free throws for 66.7 percent. She is nine of 35 from three-point range for 25.7 percent. She is averaging 11.0 points 4.7 rebounds per game in NCC play.

Julia Frie: A sophomore forward from Byron, Minn., Frie has 17 double figure scoring games including a season high of 23 points in the 81-76 loss to Nebraska-Omaha on Jan. 6, 2001. She has 38 double figure scoring games in her two years at South Dakota. Frie's career high is 31 points in 74-62 win over Concordia in the opening game of the 1999-2000 season. Frie has broken the 20-point barrier seven times. She grabbed her career high in rebounds with 12 vs. Central Oklahoma on Nov. 24, 2000 (61-54 loss). Frie, who has started all 22 games, is averaging 27.8 minutes per game. She has hit 99 of 212 field goals for a team-high 46.7 percent and 62 of 76 free throws for 81.6 percent. She is 15 of 51 from three point range for 29.4 percent.

Krista Orsack: A freshman shooting guard from Sioux Falls, Orsack has earned a spot in the starting line-up with solid play, including eight double-figure scoring games. She has a career high of 19 in the recording breaking 113-39 win over Minnesota-Morris on Dec. 2. Her rebound high is five vs. Minnesota-Morris on Dec. 2. On four occasions, Orsack has hit a career-high four three-point baskets (Grand Canyon, at Augustana, UNO, Morningside) during the 2000-01 season. She has made three three-pointers five times this season. Orsack, who has started 11 games for South Dakota, is averaging 25.1 minutes per game. She has hit 61 of 176 field goals for 34.7 percent, including 48 of 136 three-point goals for 35.3 percent. She is nine of 17 from the free throw line for 52.9 percent. She is averaging 8.0 points per game in NCC play and has 32 of 93 three-point field goals for 34.4 percent.

Jodi Schroeder: A freshman center from Tulare, S.D., Schroeder has three double figure scoring games, including a career high of 10 vs. Mount Marty (Nov. 21, 2000), Grand Canyon (Nov. 25, 2000) and South Dakota State (Jan. 26, 2001). Schroeder, who has started 10 games, is averaging 16.7 minutes per game. She is averaging 5.5 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. Schroeder has hit 38-84 field goals for 45.2 percent. She is 14 of 20 from the free throw line for 70 percent and three of six from three-point range.

Nicole Jaycox: A sophomore from Sanborn, Iowa, Jaycox has three double figure scoring games this season and 10 in her career. Her season high is 12 points vs. Minnesota-Morris on Dec. 2. Her season high in rebounds is also against Minnesota-Morris. Jaycox has a career high of 18 points in the 77-64 win over Minnesota State-Mankato at the DakotaDome last year. She has a career high of nine rebounds in the 68-50 loss to the Mavericks at the Dome a year ago. She has a career high of six assists in the 81-75 loss to St. Cloud State at the DakotaDome late in the 1999-2000 season. Jaycox, who is averaging 16.8 minutes per game on the bench, has hit 24 of 95 field goals for 25.3 percent. She is 21 of 74 from three-point range for 28.4 percent. She has hit 11 of 19 free throws for 57.9 percent.

Amanda Iverson: A sophomore forward from Vermillion, Iverson has a career high of 16 points vs. Augustana (82-70 Coyote loss) on Jan. 27 and vs. Morningside (72-50 win at the DakotaDome). In the Augie game, Iverson recorded her first career double double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She has five double figure scoring games this season and eight in her career. Her career high in rebounds is 12 in the Coyotes 77-57 win over Morningside during the 1999-2000 season. Iverson, who is averaging 13.5 minutes per game, has hit 51 of 112 field goals for 45.5 percent. She is just two of 17 from three-point range for 11.8 percent. She is 44 of 53 from the free throw line for 83 percent. She had 13 points and eight rebounds in the 53-51 win over Northern Colorado on February 3.

Heather Nelson: The Yankton sophomore has recorded nine double figure games this season, which gives her 28 for her career. She has a career high of 26 points in both the 74-61 win over Wayne State (Dec. 18, 1999) and in 75-58 win (Jan. 8, 2000) over Northern Colorado during her freshman season. She has two career double doubles and has a career rebound high of 11 vs. St. Cloud State (71-68 loss at St. Cloud on Jan. 28, 2000). This season, Nelson has started 10 games and is averaging 21.2 minutes of action per game. She has hit 62 of 185 field goals for 33.5 percent, including 29 of 92 three-point baskets for 31.5 percent. She is 35 of 43 from the free throw line for 81.4 percent. She is averaging 9.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game in NCC play. Nelson is coming off consecutive double figure games vs. NDSU (18) and UND (19).

Alissa Koronkiewicz: She has a career high of 14 rebounds vs. Jamestown during 1998-99. Her season high in rebounds is 10 vs.. Minnesota-Morris on Dec. 2. She scored a career-high nine points in the 81-56 win over Grand Canyon on Nov. 25. She had eight points, four rebounds and four assists in the 70-54 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Feb. 2. A starter in 12 games this season, she is averaging 20.9 minutes per game. Koronkiewicz has made 26 of 62 field goals for 41.9 percent and 14 of 36 free throws for 38.9 percent.
