Jamel White, who earned all-American honors at The University of
South Dakota in 1999, scored his first regular season touchdown in the
National Football League on Sunday. White, who had 64 yards rushing on 23
rushing attempts, helped lead the Cleveland Browns (2-1) to a 23-14 win over
the Jacksonville Jaquars (2-1) in Jacksonville on Sunday. He had five
catches for 26 yards. Overall this season, he has 36 rushes for 131 yards
(5.2 average) with nine pass receptions for 56 yards and three kickoff
returns for 52 yards. In his second year with the Browns, he has 344 yards
rushing, 186 receiving yards and 987 yards in kickoff returns. White, who
played two seasons at South Dakota, is in his second season with the Browns.
Originally signed by the Indianapolis Colts in April of 2000, White caught
on with the Browns after he was one of the final cuts by the Colts following
the preseason camp later that summer. White rushed for 2,220 yards in two
seasons (1998-99) at South Dakota, which ranks him sixth all-time. White,
who set or tied 14 records during his stellar career at South Dakota, holds
the Coyotes' single season rushing record with 1,796 yards in 1999.
