FARGO, N.D. -- The 14th-ranked South Dakota women's basketball team dropped to 15-3 overall and 5-2 in North Central Conference play with a 100-74 loss to seventh-ranked North Dakota State Friday night in front of 3,543 fans at the Bison Sports Arena.
NDSU's 100-point performance was the most points South Dakota has allowed since the 1997-98 season (109 points by North Dakota, Jan. 31, 1998). The Bison, who improved to 18-3 overall and 6-2 in the NCC, connected on 41-of-69 shots from the field for 59.4 percent and knocked down 12-of-20 attempts from the three-point line for 60.0 percent, both season highs for USD opponents.
North Dakota State built a 53-26 lead after the first half of play, as nine players scored for the Bison in the opening stanza. The Coyotes struggled from the field in the first half, hitting just 9-of-32 for 28.1 percent.
South Dakota bounced back early in the second half, outscoring NDSU 25-12 in the first seven minutes of the second half to cut the Bison advantage to 12 points at 65-53. NDSU regained the momentum though with a 10-2 run over the next 3:45 to take a 75-55 lead with 9:32 to play and never looked back.
For the game, South Dakota shot 43.8 percent from the field (28-of-64), improving its poor first half percentage by knocking down 59.4 percent of its shots in the second half (19-of-32). The Coyotes hit 9-of-23 shots from the three-point line (39.1 percent) and 9-of-13 attempts at the foul line (69.2 percent). NDSU won the battle of the boards, 38-31, and dished out 30 assists, a season high for a USD opponent, to the Coyotes' 14.
USD was led in scoring by senior forward Julia Frie (Byron, Minn.) with 18 points and six rebounds. Four other Coyotes scored in double figures including 15 points from junior Mandy Koupal (Wagner, S.D.), 13 points from freshman Renae Luecke (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and 10 points from both senior Amanda Iverson (Vermillion, S.D.), a season-high, and senior Heather Nelson (Yankton, S.D.).
Five players scored in double figures for the Bison, who were led by Michelle Frickie with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
South Dakota will look to rebound tomorrow night on the road against St. Cloud State. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
