BROOKINGS, S.D. - The seventh-ranked South Dakota women's basketball team (25-4) had its 10-game winning streak snapped Friday with a 90-75 loss to 11th-ranked North Dakota (24-5) in the semifinals of the NCC/Well Fargo Finals at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D. It is the second straight season that USD has been defeated in the semifinal round of the conference tournament.
The Coyotes, who were ranked second in this week's North Central regional poll, will await a bid to the NCAA Division II field of 64 that will be announced, Sunday at 9 p.m.
UND, which advanced to the conference championship game against South Dakota State, shot 60.7 percent from the field for the game (34-of-56) and out-rebounded the Coyotes, 36-22. USD's 22 rebounds was a season low.
Junior forward Mandy Koupal scored 30 points on 11-of-23 shooting to lead South Dakota. It was the fifth time this season that the Wagner, S.D., native scored 30 points or more. She also hit three, three-pointers.
North Dakota had a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures, led by Kristi Boese, who had 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting.
Early on, USD took a 9-6 lead when junior point guard Stacy Schooley hit a jumper as the shot clock buzzer sounded with 15:45 on the clock. After USD opened up a 16-10 lead on six points by Koupal, UND took control of the game. They outscored USD, 20-6, to grab a 30-22 lead. South Dakota had a hard time finding offense. UND didn't. North Dakota continued the pressure and built their lead, hitting 6-of-11 three pointers in the opening frame to take a 47-32 lead into the locker room.
In the first half, Koupal had 11 points, Schooley added six and Julia Frie had seven to lead the Coyotes, but USD had little production from the rest of the team. USD was just 10-of-25 for 40 percent, but hit just 2-of-7 from the three-point arc in the first stanza.
While the Coyotes struggled, UND hit 19-of-31 field goals for 61.3 percent, including 6-of-11 from the three-point line. Boese had 13 points as she hit 6-of-7 field goals, including a three-pointer. Marisa Leighton had seven points, while Amy Mahlum and Gina Britz added six.
USD made a quick start in the second half, cutting the 17-point lead to nine when Nelson hit a three-pointer, stole a pass and hit a lay-up, followed by a three-pointer by Koupal at the 18:51 mark. However, UND answered the charge and built the lead back to 55-42 when Boll scored inside and never looked back.
Also posting double figure nights for the Coyotes was Frie, who had 15 points, and Schooley with 10.
For the game, South Dakota shot 47.3 percent from the field (26-of-55), including knocking down 7-of-18 three-point attempts (38.9 percent). From the foul line, USD converted on 16-of-22 attempts (72.7 percent).
Boll hit 7-of-11 from the field and had 18 points while Becky Moen added 13 points for UND.
