Meghan Woster hit a free throw with 2.3 seconds to play to lift the 24th-ranked South Dakota Women's Basketball Team (10-3) to a 80-79 overtime win over Wayne State (11-3) in nonconference women's basketball on Sunday night at Wayne, Neb.
Woster of Sioux Falls, S.D., made 1-of-2 free throws in the closing seconds after being fouled on a drive to the basket in the closing seconds. Wayne State had tied the game with 8.3 seconds to play.
Jenni Flynn, a sophomore from South Sioux City, Neb., scored a career-high 25 points and hit a game-tying three-point shot from 24 feet with 0.9 seconds left in regulation. Flynn hit 7-of-12 from the field, including 5-of-6 from three-point range and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. She also had eight rebounds. USD received support from reserve guard Kristi Tighe of Homer, Neb., who had 17 points and did not miss a shot from the field. Tighe hit 6-of-6 from the field, including 5-of-5 from three-point range. In the past two games, Tighe has scored 38 points (career-high 21 points vs. Chadron State on Dec. 29) off the bench. Aside from Flynn and Tighe, USD had two other players score in double figures. Woster had 11 points, eight assists and seven rebounds while Vanessa Yanez of Wagner, S.D., supplied 16 points and six rebounds.
Key for South Dakota was its perimeter game. USD made a season-best 15 three-pointers, connecting on 53.6 percent (15-of-28). Overall, USD hit 26-of-62 field goals for 41.9 percent. USD made just 13-of-22 free throws for 59.1 percent. For the game, Wayne State hit 27-of-67 from the field for 40.3 percent. They were just 7-of-24 for 29.2 percent from three-point range. The Wildcats hit 18-of-22 free throws for 81.8 percent. Erin McCormick led Wayne State with 22 points while Nicole Gruntorad had a double double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Wayne State won the rebounding battle, 43-41.
It was the second one-point win for the Coyotes against the Wildcats this season. On Dec. 30, USD rallied for a 61-60 win at the DakotaDome. South Dakota ended a six-game winning streak by Wayne State that dated back to the loss to South Dakota earlier this year. USD has now won two straight and will host Augustana (15-2) in its North Central Conference opener on Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. at the DakotaDome.
For the second straight game vs. Wayne State, USD rallied after trailing early. Wayne State built early leads of 8-0 and 12-2 before USD rebounded with a 14-3 run to take a 16-15 at the 12:07 mark of the first half. Wayne State responded themselves and took a 29-21 lead with 6:52 to play in the first half. A Flynn three-point basket with 25 seconds left in the half pulled USD to within 39-34 at the break.
South Dakota hit 48 percent from the field in the first half on 11-of-23 shooting. USD made 5-of-10 three-point field goals but just 6-of-13 free throws for 46 percent.
Down eight (44-36) early in the second half, USD hit three straight three-point baskets to tie the game at 46-46 with 16:33 left in the game. Woster, Kayla Jacobs of Watertown, S.D., and Yanez hit the three-pointers during the 9-2 run.
After a Flynn basket gave USD a 48-46 lead, Tighe made a three-pointer at the 14:38 mark to build the USD advantage to 51-46. USD added to its lead with a Flynn field goal providing USD with a 61-52 lead at the nine minute mark. After Flynn made a pair of free throws for a 63-57 lead with 7:15 to play, the Coyotes went on a scoring drought. Wayne State gradually worked itself into the lead, taking a 65-63 lead at the four-minute mark. After the Wildcats led 67-63 with 1:37 to play, the Coyotes spun a rally of its own. First, Woster had a steal and a lay-up with 57 seconds left in the game to draw USD within 67-65. Then, after Kristen Humphries of Wayne State made 1-of-2 free throws with eight seconds to play, Woster found an open Flynn, who canned a three-pointer with 0.9 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
In the extra session, Yanez had a three-point field goal at the 4:25 mark that gave USD a 71-70 lead. Woster tied the game at 73-73 on a jumper with 3:40 to play. Tighe again hit a big shot, knocking home a three-point field goal with 3:09 to play as USD led, 76-73. Wayne State took a 77-76 lead on a pair of free throws by Gruntorad at the 1:53 mark.
Flynn was fouled on the Coyotes' possession and her two free throws gave USD a 78-77 lead. She made another free throw with about 30 seconds left for a 79-77 lead. However, her second free throw, which was also good, was disallowed due to a USD lane infraction. Then, Wayne State knocked home a pair of free throws with 8.3 seconds left to set up Woster's heroics in the final seconds.
